Shift odometer · captures deadhead miles

Pre-accept decision · do this before every tap
The rule, memorised
Accept at $28/hr gross or better and at least $7 total.
Marginal at $22–28/hr gross — only take it inside a boost window or if it ends in a productive zone.
Decline below $22/hr gross, and always decline anything under $1.50/mile with a long return leg.
Acceptance rate matters, but a low acceptance rate costs far less than a week of unprofitable miles. Decline is a decision, not a failure.

Cost model · the inputs that decide your take-home
Leave car payment and insurance at 0 if you would pay them whether or not you drive — that gives your true causal cost and a higher, more honest take-home. Fill them in for the conservative banker's view.

Tax position
Deduct the standard mileage rate or actual fuel/maintenance — never both. The mileage rate is the one to use. Keep the expense log anyway: it proves business use and tracks vehicle health.
